Significant funding for Regional Sport Association of Kainuu for the implementation of side events of the EYOF 2021 Vuokatti.

The European Union has provided Regional Sport Association of Kainuu with almost EUR 400,000 Erasmus + project funding in connection with the European Youth Winter Olympic Festival (EYOF) on 11-18 December 2021 and the side events to be held before and during the event. The aim of the project is to increase the internationalisation and international competence of young people, to promote sports and to involve young people in event organisations. Mika Kilpeläinen, Mayor of Sotkamo and Chairman of the EYOF 2021 Organizing Committee, considers the received project funding to be very important for the event. “A big thanks to everyone involved in the project preparation. The received funding will make possible to involve young people more strongly in the implementation of the event. Such an opportunity is really welcome, especially now that the challenge of organising the event and rising costs have been exacerbated by the Covid 19 situation. ”

Teemu Takalo, Executive Director of Regional Sport Association of Kainuu, would like to highlight the opportunity of the project and the EYOF event to increase the sporting activity of the residents of Kainuu and the vitality of sport club activities. “The aim is that EYOF 2021 event and the related internationality, will inspire children, young people and families to do more sport, as well as attract new young people in sports club activities.” With the help of project funding, a sport tour built around the Olympic flame will be organised in all  municipalities of Kainuu, and the 5th and 6th graders of the primary schools will be transported from each Kainuu municipality to the site to follow the event. The 9th graders of Kainuu’s upper secondary schools will have their own sports-related campaign from which the winning class will be rewarded with a VIP day at the EYOF event.

The project also includes an international seminar for young coaches to be held during the EYOF event together with the Finnish Coaches’ Association, as well as an international youth media camp focusing on sports media. In addition, the intention is to implement an international winter school for physical education students for EYOF 2021 in cooperation with Kajaani University of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Sports Science of the University of Jyväskylä . With Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, the project will model the cooperation between educational institutions related to the implementation of a major events and the involvement of young people in the event production.
