The 2021 Winter edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) is decided to be postponed from February 2021 to December 11-18, 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The European Olympic Committees’ Executive Committee decided new dates for the event on Monday at its meeting.
- Unfortunately, the Covid-19 situation does not allow for EYOF event to be held as planned. The most important thing for us is to ensure the safety of the young athletes, and that is not yet possible in February 2021, says Mikko Salonen, CEO of the Finnish Olympic Committee.
Chair of the Local Organising Committee and Mayor of Sotkamo, Mika Kilpeläinen, adds that various alternatives had already been prepared in Kainuu after the Covid-19 situation escalated last spring. Kilpeläinen sees rescheduling the EYOF event as the only possible solution.
- We want to be responsible and act with health in mind. Therefore, postponing the event is the only solution. The timing will bring its own challenges to the arrangements, but our promise is continuing with the preparation with the same determination and commitment as earlier. Our goal is to host the best EYOF event of all time here in Vuokatti and Kajaani, Kilpeläinen says.
The European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) is a competition for young European athletes created by the European Olympic Committees and organized under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee. There are both summer and winter editions, which take place in two-year cycles, in odd-numbered years.
